Liliana BASARAB (b. 1979) lives and works in Bucharest. Her socially engaged art often thematizes the notion of representation. She works in multiple artistic media, such as ceramics, textiles, drawing, performance, participatory workshops and video, and is interested in gender issues. She is part of the collective that organizes the Sofia Nădejde Awards for women's literature. Her works have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions including: Inima o am pe limba [I have my heart on my tongue] (solo) at Sandwich Bucharest, 2020; Ex-east - Past and recent histories of the Romanian avant-garde, Espace Niemeyer, Paris, France, and Garage sale, Sandwich and Beijing Konditorei, C5CNM Beijing, China, 2019; Life - way of use - Art Encounters, Timișoara, RO, 2017; Talent is not democratic, art is not a luxury (solo), Borderline Art Space, Iași, RO, 2016; In times of hope and anxiety. Liliana Basarab tackles feminist themes directly, her visual universe often eliciting male anxiety. The Rosa Dentata [Rose with Teeth] series of works associates rose thorns with being an element of protection from violence and abuse.
