Titu Toncian (b. 1955) graduated in ceramics from the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca, where he is currently a lecturer. He has exhibited in museums and galleries in Cluj-Napoca, Alba-Iulia, Târgu Mureș, Sibiu, Baia Mare, Timișoara, Bucharest, Oradea, and Galați. Works by him have formed part of the "Bronze Age" Small Sculpture Exhibition in Bratislava, Slovakia, the Romania Exhibition (Pavilion of Eastern European countries) at FLICAM - International Ceramic Art Museum in Fuping, Shaanxi, China, the "Romanian Ceramics Today" Exhibition at the Romanian Cultural Centre in Paris, the Biennial of Academic Artists in Rawicz-Rokosowo, Poland, the "Illusion" International Biennial of Ceramics in Kapfenberg, Austria, and of various other exhibitions in Poland, Switzerland, Germany, South Korea, and the USA.
Titu Toncian belongs to that important generation of ceramists who were trained in the ceramics-glass section of the Ion Andreescu Institute of Fine Arts in Cluj, under the guidance of Ana Lupaș and Mircea Spătaru. This work, made by the artist on his 60th birthday, involved the creating of 60 centaurs, each standing for one year of the artist's life. The work was exhibited at his anniversary exhibition at the Cluj Museum of Art in 2015.
