Sergiu Toma (b. 1987) lives and works in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. He holds an MA in painting from the University of Art and Design, Cluj-Napoca. In the past decade, Sergiu Toma has had solo exhibitions at Galerie Fravi, Domat, Ems, Switzerland; Galleria Doris Ghetta, Ortisei, Italy; Galleria Monica De Cardenas, Milano, Italy; Metis NL Gallery, Amsterdam, Netherlands; Gallery Mie Lefever, Destelbergen, Belgium, and Slag Gallery, New York, USA.
Sergiu Toma’s work is a realm of haunting and uncanny imagery. Scenarios that appear familiar take on a dream-like twist when looked at closely and mundane moments turn into what appear to be hazy memories. The images seem to disintegrate before the viewer’s eyes, connecting an imaginary world with the real and palpable one. This aura of mysticism is rendered gracefully through the use of composition and through the color palette, which resembles an old photograph, one whose owner cannot really remember taking.
